Companies are looking to outsource the maintenance and monitoring of their IT infrastructure to a third party to improve efficiency and save costs. BizTech2.com caught up with Uday Challu, founding partner and CEO, iYogi, to see what the company has to offer in this space.

As far as Enterprise and SME customers are concerned, which verticals are you focusing on?

Our focus will mostly be on small companies with around five to 100 users and also firms that have multiple small branch offices like travel agencies, retail stores etc.

What kind of support services do you provide to your customers? What is the Green PC service?

iYogi provides the next generation of remote computer support services for consumers and businesses. For consumers, our live 24/7 support extends to technologies we use everyday, including hardware, software applications, devices, peripherals and networking equipment. iYogi also offers a full range of business IT solutions including managed monitoring, managed services, set-up and installation services, and incident-based services.

Green PC Service

With the current state of the global climate and increasing dependency on the computer, iYogi helps PC users reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time. iYogi’s Green PC service is the first in the independent computer support industry to offer customers a way to save money, conserve energy and protect the environment by optimising their PC’s efficiency. Consumers and businesses can save up to $200 per year, per desktop, in energy costs with iYogi’s Green PC application. This green application makes the computer environmentally friendly by reducing power consumption by almost 50 percent.

Our Green PC dashboard helps customise power settings and calculate power savings in kWh (kilowatt hour). The Green PC dashboard also gives a status on the reduction of CO2 and how responsible usage will benefit the environment by saving trees. A customised service that increases the energy efficiency of computers, undertakes the below-mentioned three primary initiatives:

- Computer assessment, analysing settings and PC energy use
- Customised efficiency planning geared specifically to the individual’s usage patterns
- Implementing setting changes to maximise the computer’s energy use

What are the technologies that allow you to offer 24/7 support and ensure there is no downtime at the client site?

We have invested significantly in developing a comprehensive monitoring and management tools stack. This enables us to manage and monitor all devices in the office network as well as for branch offices and mobile users. Our tools continuously monitor the customer’s network and notify our NOC (Network Operations Centre) in case of problems. Based on the set of events, tickets are automatically generated and escalated to corresponding teams. Over and above our proactive approach, the customer always has an option to call our 24X7 support line for issues that are not identified via the monitoring tools.

Please throw some light on your proprietary iMantra technology.

iMantra is a CRM system, which is tailor-made to suit the emerging business needs at iYogi. It allows for the formation of individualised customer relationships with the aim of providing personalised services to each subscriber. This tool is built on the latest java technology with a layered architecture that makes it scalable and secure. This architecture provides a seamless workflow and independent channels for various business needs: sales, support, quality and customer service. The entire system can be exposed in the form of secure APIs and Web services, which makes it a re-usable entity.

Your business model is similar to BPOs in India providing technical support to offshore customers. What unique values do you bring to this ecosystem that would help a potential client choose you over a competitor?

iYogi’s business model is different from traditional BPOs. Some key factors that differentiate iYogi include:

- Direct-to-consumer and -small business: iYogi delivers technical support services directly to consumers and small businesses and is a global technical support brand based out of India. Unlike traditional BPOs in India, iYogi does not provide any private label support and/ or work on behalf of large OEMs or software publishers.

- Optimised Processes: iYogi has developed proprietary processes for consistently delivering on a resolution rate of 87 percent, which is among the highest published benchmarks in the support industry, where averages hover in the range of 50 percent.

- Comprehensive technology platform: iYogi’s global delivery platform, iMantra, gets smarter with every customer interaction. It documents every problem, the solution and relevant hardware and software aspects, while capturing each customer’s demographic information and creating a behavioural profile. All of this information is at the fingertips of iYogi’s Global Tech Experts. This set-up combines a knowledge base with a comprehensive set of tools and technology expertise. iYogi offers a range of tools that complement its remote support services for helping customers maintain technology at peak performance levels. iYogi’s products include iYogi Smart PC Scan, iYogi Support Dock, iYogi Green PC and iYogi PC Optimisation.

How do you plan to move up the value chain in the times to come?

The growing use and penetration of the Internet and new Web-based applications has consequently opened the door to threats and vulnerabilities, which affect the system performance and ultimately lead to degrading performance. If the threats are diagnosed early on, the impact on efficiency can be minimised considerably. Currently, a user only realizes that he needs technical support once the damage has occurred and reactive methods of support are used to recover from the loss.

At iYogi, we are developing our capabilities to not only provide support when demanded, but to also monitor, pre-empt and fix threats before they can cause any damage to the computer. This will be possible only by combining technology with processes that are capable of re-defining the way technical support is delivered today.

What is your India strategy?

Technically, we are capable of servicing any geography including India. At this stage, we are looking for the right kind of partners to find access to potential customers and provide them a consolidated, 360-degree solution and services for issues relating to hardware, software, network etc. We aim to launch our India services in the coming six to eight months. Our services will offer clients a one-stop solution for all their business needs.

Tying: Brussels wants to know if Microsoft is putting pressure on manufacturers

Microsoft is currently the subject of an investigation by the European Commission concerning the integration of Internet Explorer in Windows to get the most out of your internet. Following the complaint of Opera, publisher of the eponymous browser, Brussels is trying to determine whether the practices of Microsoft harm competition.

To offer more freedom to users in their choice of browser, the European Commission intends in particular to ask the manufacturers to offer multiple applications.

Microsoft might try to influence manufacturers and Microsoft Intenet Explorer 8 : Flooded with complaints

According to Bloomberg, the manufacturers have received a questionnaire of nine questions on, inter alia, the Mariners to take into account and how to offer users the freedom of choice.

This choice could be made from a screen with several browsers in the market. The software would be preloaded on the PC or downloaded from a link on the selection screen.

But the question of the method is not the only interest the European Commission. In its questionnaire, it also contains three other questions intended to highlight potential pressure on Microsoft to PC manufacturers.

The European executive wants to find out if the publisher has contacted vendors to influence their position on how to propose several browsers on their computers. The report polled 152 IT decision makers.

"Basically, the bottom line is Microsoft Office is really quite entrenched in the global large business organization today," she said in an interview today.

Microsoft's technical support is winding down for both Office 2000 and Office 2003, and the roughly 20% of companies that support some version of Office but still have not moved to the current version, Office 2007, will have a decision to make in the coming year, McLeish said.

When the recession hit, companies considered their choices of productivity applications as an area where they could cut corners, she said. In 2010, depending on the economy, companies will likely start to make plans for either upgrading to Office 2010 or choosing an alternative.

Microsoft isn't planning to release Office 2010 until sometime in the first half of next year, giving competitors a chance to gain headway with enterprise customers, she said. "Given they were dragging their feet, coupled with the soured economy, it's time for them to make some choices about the future," McLeish said.

If the economy improves, Office 2010 will be a likely choice for many, she said. However, since companies don't need all of the complex functionality that Office provides, some may choose to transition from Office 2000 or 2003 to a less expensive alternative.

Still, interoperability with Office remains a key factor -- because of its long history, enterprises "won't be able to completely remove Microsoft Office from the business," McLeish said.

Google's recently introduced Wave application, which combines e-mail, IM, blogging, photo management, wikis and document sharing, could possibly become a compelling option, particularly if Google were to tie that functionality into its Google Apps suite, she added.

Vista's gains are down since Microsoft released Windows 7 beta and RC

Windows Vista's market share growth has slowed since Microsoft released public versions of Vista's successor, Windows 7, according to data published 1st June by Web metrics company Net Applications.

For the fourth month in a row, Vista's gains in May were lower than its 12-month average. That stretch coincides with the availability of Windows 7 beta in mid-January, and with the one-and-only "release candidate" issued early last month.

Although Vista has consistently posted increases since it was released -- almost exclusively at the expense of the aging Windows XP -- the size of those gains has fluctuated. During 2008, for example, Vista grew, on average, by 0.9 of a percentage point each month.

In the four full months since Windows 7 was issued to the public, however, Vista's gains have averaged just 0.5 of a point, a little over half as much.

By Net Applications' data, Windows Vista was the operating system used by 24.4% of the machines that connected to one of the 40,000-plus sites it monitors for clients, an increase of 0.45 of a percentage point over the previous month. The months before that, Vista increased 0.48 of a point (April), 0.63 (March) and 0.31 (February).

Windows 7, meanwhile, grabbed 0.42% of the market in May, an increase of 0.18 of a percentage point that translated into a month-to-month growth rate of 75%. The jump was likely caused by the May 4 delivery of the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC).

Vista's smaller-than-usual gains in 2009 were at times dramatically down from the increases during the same months last year, illustrating the slowing uptake of the two-year-old operating system. February 2009's increase was off by 67% from February 2008, while May 2009's gain was down 36% from the same month last year.

The numbers shouldn't be a surprise. Reviews of Windows 7 have generally been positive, and an April poll claimed that corporate beta testers were four times more likely to be "very satisfied" with the beta than were early users of Windows Vista.

At the same time Vista's growth has slowed, so has the pace of Windows XP's decline, hinting that users are tightening their grip on the old-but-still-loved OS. Last month, for example, Windows XP's share dropped by 0.67 of a percentage point, to 61.5%, a significantly smaller fall-off than either the 12-month average of 0.88 of a percentage point or XP's loss of 0.95 of a percentage point in May 2008.

But not everything associated with Windows 7 was good news last month. While Net Applications noted the near-doubling of the preview's market share during May, analysis of the month's data showed that uptake progressively slowed as the weeks went by.

System Restore Helps

System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.

Sometimes, the installation of a program or a driver can cause an unexpected change to your computer or cause Windows to behave unpredictably. Usually, uninstalling the program or driver corrects the problem. If uninstalling does not fix the problem, you can try restoring your computer's system to an earlier date when everything worked correctly.

System Restore uses a feature called System Protection to regularly create and save restore points on your computer. These restore points contain information about registry settings and other system information that Windows uses. You can also create restore points manually.

System Restore is not intended for backing up personal files, so it cannot help you recover a personal file that has been deleted or damaged. You should regularly back up your personal files and important data using a backup program.

System Restore tool may not necessarily help you determine the issue. The System Restore tool uses restore points to return system files and settings to an earlier point in time. You can use it to restore the operating system to a point in time in which you did not experience the issue. When you use System Restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed are removed.

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

1. Click Start , type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.

3. In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.

4. Click Finish.

The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

iYogi Awarded Red Herring Top 100 Global Company

Recognizing the first, global, direct to consumers and small business technical support service from India

New York, January 21st, 2009 - iYogi (www.iyogi.net), today announced that it has been awarded as one of the Red Herring Top 100 Companies. Windows didn’t show it in explorer and in device manager there was this error: Device Cannot Start (Code 10).

Then, i remembered having to face this problem more than once before. I offered my help as usual and the problem was solved. I thought of posting about it just in case someone needs a quick fix for it.

This problem can have many possible causes. The most common ones are that programs for burning or ripping, like Nero, AnyDVD and others sometimes left drivers installed when they are removed.

The first solution is to re-install the program. About a year ago, AnyDVD caused this, so re-installing it would solve the problem, same with some old versions of Nero. Try this to see if a program you installed/uninstalled was the cause.

The other solution involves deleting two registry entries and restarting your computer. It works for XP and Vista.

Open the Windows Registry Editor. Type regedit in the Run box of the Start Menu.

Navigate to this path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Go to File and choose Export. Then select Selected Branch and save this in case you run into a problem. You will be able to restore these values if something goes wrong.

Right click these two entries and delete them. UpperFilters and LowerFilters. If you only have one of them there, don’t worry, delete it.

Restart you computer. You should be able to see and use your CD-DVD drive again.

In case deleting the key causes you more trouble or conflicts, double click the file you saved and restart Windows. The entries will be restored as they were before deleting them.

How to uninstall Windows Vista

There are many people who face a lot of problems is uninstalling Windows Vista, so I decided to post a Guide on How to Uninstall Windows Vista...

This work when both the OS : Windows XP and Vista are installed.

Start Windows XP, and Install VistaBootPro. Once you launch Vista Boot Pro Go to Manage OS Entries and then select the Microsoft Windows Vista entry. But, the very first question, in this regard may come to your mind is why you need of Vista registry repair, as Vista, like the previous versions of Windows, offers an efficient Vista registry storage and maintenance. Vista stores and maintains the registry information whenever there is installation or uninstallation in your system or there are some changes in the system settings or the different hardware or software configurations in the system. However, errors began to flood your system registry after you use your Vista for a considerable period of time. The main reason behind this can be identified as the overflow of registry entries in your system, and this is generally caused by continuous use of Windows Registry, incomplete installation and uninstallation processes and various spyware keys. These problems gradually affect the performance of your system and soon your system starts responding very slowly.

To overcome such a situation, you need to repair your Windows registry and for this a registry cleaner for Vista is a must. The registry cleaner enables you to remove the various inconsistencies in the Windows Registry which helps in enhancing the performance your system. The primary function of the registry cleaner is to scan your Windows Vista efficiently and effectively, and delete the various unnecessary entries in the Windows Registry. A good registry cleaner always offers registry backups before deleting the unused registry entries so that whenever you need any particular registry entry in the near future, you can restore immediately. It also deletes the registry entries made by spyware and adwareprograms to provide network security to some extent. So, by performing Vista registry repair, you can keep your Windows registry up-to-date and also schedule, backup and restore the registry according to your convenience. In other words, Vista registry repair offers you to extract the maximum efficiency from your system and keeps your system safe from various spyware and adware

Windows Vista Repair Options

Windows Vista does not contain a Recovery Console, therefore doing a repair install like that we are familiar with in Windows XP is not possible. Instead, if you need to replace the operating system, you either have to re-install Vista from scratch, or else re-image the drive from a backup source created using the Windows Vista Backup Status and Configuration application. this then effectively replaces the current copy of Windows Vista with a shadow copy you backed up previously.

This backup option is the only one provided by Windows Vista. of course there are other ways of imaging your hard drive, but these require the user to purchase a third party application.

Of course, re-imaging is one option. If, however, you are simply experiencing startup problems or perhaps you cannot readily access your system and need to do a system restore, then you need to look at Windows Vista's Repair Your Computer options.

How you access the repair options will depend upon whether you have a Windows Vista installation disk or whether your operating system came pre-installed by your PC manufacturer.

Windows Installation Disk

NOTE : With the Complete PC Restore Option you must have made a backup of your system, either on your hard drive or on a set of DVDs, in order to use this option. If you don't have a backup then don't use this option
1/ make sure your PC can boot directly from the Vista DVD. One such feature is the Windows Vista backup and restore center. With the backup center you can schedule an automatic backup to run whenever you want. It is recommend you use an external hard driver just in case your main one crashes.

Because most systems do not ship with a Windows Vista CD anymore it is also important that you create a full backup of your computer as well. By creating a full image backup you will not have to re-install any programs or re-do your system settings in case of a computer crash. This will save you many hours of frustration.

Now for the bad news! Only Windows Vista Business and Ultimate have the full image backup features. The rest do still have a backup but it will only take care of documents and not the programs or operating system. All is not lost however. Many companies such as HP have a one time image back that you can use. We will attempt to go over the different backup methods in the article and give you multiple options so you can choose what works best for you. Having a full image backup is a must! You will hate your self later on if you do not do this.

(HP only) To use the HP One time image backup simply click the Windows start button and browse to the “PC Help and Tools” folder. Then select “Recovery Disc”. This will create a full backup of your computer including programs. Keep the discs in a safe spot and read on for further info.

The Windows Vista Backup features for the Business and Ultimate addition are easy to use. Simply click the windows start button and in the search box type “backup” There you will see the backup and restore function. Simply open it and create a full system backup. This will be your recovery image. Do this at least every 6 months so you have a new fresh copy of your system.

For the rest of you use the above method but you will notice you can not create a full backup image. You should still create and schedule a backup of “My Documents” and any other files you have on your system. I would set the backup to run once a week.

Windows Vista Copy Protection Cracked

More than a year after Windows Vista was introduced, hackers have finally developed a clean crack of Windows Vista. There have been a variety of workarounds for Vista's copy protection before now, but this is the first time someone has figured out a way to install a cracked version that would pass all of Microsoft's various anti-piracy checks. It seems that certain OEMs found the activation process too burdensome and persuaded Microsoft to provide them with a way to bypass it in order to save their own customers the hassle. Hackers figured out how to activate this special "no activation" mode on cracked copies of Vista. I think this is one of the biggest reasons copy protection schemes fail: they almost always creates serious inconveniences for customers, and irritating customers hurts the bottom line. Companies may talk a tough line about fighting piracy, but when push comes to shove, they're not willing to cut off their own nose to spite their face by insisting on enforcing a copy protection scheme that would put their product at a disadvantage in the marketplace.

Of course, the obvious question is why companies implement copy protection schemes in the first place if they invariably wind up compromising them. The reason, I think, is that these trade-offs are almost never made explicit to corporate decision makers ahead of time. When the copy protection plan is being pitched to management, its developers only talk about how great it will work. Only later, once it's actually being implemented, do people start noticing that it will also cause a lot of problems. But by that time, the copy protection system is too far along the development process to be canned, so instead exceptions are added. These exceptions prevent the copy protection system from crippling the product, but they also undermine its effectiveness as an anti-piracy measure. So customers have to deal with annoying restrictions and the product still gets pirated.

Install and Uninstall Additional Fonts in Vista

Install a Font:
Here is the guide to help you out to do so.

To access the Vista Features screen you should follow these steps:

Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu. The Start button looks like this:

When the Start Menu opens click on the Control Panel menu option.

When the Control Panel window opens click on the Uninstall a program option option under the Programs category. This option is shown by the arrow in the image below. If you are using the Classic View of the Control Panel, then you would double-click on the Programs and Features icon instead.

You will now be presented with the Programs and Features screen, or Uninstall or change a program screen, as shown in the image below.

To access the Windows features screen you need to single-click on the option labeled Turn Windows features on or off as designated by the arrow in the image above.

Windows Vista will now ask for your permission to access the Windows Vista Features. You should click on the Continue button to give this permission.

The Windows Vista Feature List window will now open displaying all the Features available for your version of Vista. An entry can be a single feature or a feature with sub features. When enabling features that have sub features it is possible to only enable those sub features that are required by you. This enables you to finely tune how you want Vista to operate.

Next to each feature is a box that can have three states. If the checkbox is checked that means that the feature, and all of its subfeatures if it has any, are enabled. If the box is filled with a solid blue color, then that means that some subfeatures of this feature are enabled but not all of them. If the checkbox is empty, then that feature and none of its subfeatures are enabled.

To enable a feature, simply put a checkmark next to the feature name. To disable a feature simply remove the check from the feature or one of its subfeatures. When you are happy with how you disabled and enabled the features, you should click on the OK button to save these changes.

Now that you know how to access the Windows Vista Feature List and to activate and disable features you can control what programs and capabilities are available to you when using Vista. For a description of each feature, if they are enabled by default, and whether or not you need it, please read Windows Vista Feature List.

Info extracted from its source at bleepingcomputer

Speed up Vista with ReadyBoost

A very simple feature added to all Windows Vista products is "ReadyBoost". ReadyBoost is an exterior add-on system memory (RAM) feature that uses your USB drive to store commonly used files so that Vista doesn't have to go looking for these files on your hard drive. The flash drive that is used must meet with some general performance specifications in order to be used with ReadyBoost. ReadyBoost's minimum performance and space requirements are as follows:

· The device must be at least 64 MB

· The device must be USB 2.0

· It has to be able to read at 3.5 MB/s

· It has to be able to write at 2.5 MB/s

Once you install your USB flash drive, Windows Vista will perform a performance check automatically to ensure that it is fast enough to work with the ReadyBoost feature. If it fails this test, you will receive a prompt notifying you of this. If it passes, you will be asked if you would like to use this device with ReadyBoost. You are able to specify how much of the flash drives storage you would like to use with ReadyBoost. The rest of the memory would of course be available for file transfers and such.

Currently, USB flash drive manufactures are not producing any kind of "ReadyBoost" capable notifications on their products, so it is impossible to tell if the one that you've purchased will in fact work with ReadyBoost. Just make sure that you save your receipt so that you can return it.

Also, if you are running a machine that has decent memory installed already. You may not notice much of a benefit of using ReadyBoost. But, as your system gets older and you have installed many more applications on your hard drive, this feature may save you from having to go under the hood and install more internal random access memory (RAM).

Vista's security features

Below, is some of the outlined Vista's security features:

User Account Protection:

Vista's user account gives added protection and allows for users to be allowed to run applications under a standard account. But, in the event the standard account user is unknowingly trying to run a malicious code, Vista will intervene and not allow the user to continue. Or, if a standard user account is trying to install a hotel printer driver, Vista will just simply ask you to confirm your intensions and provide credentials.

Protection from malware:

Malware can cause company IT departments and their users to waste significant amounts of times in dealing with the effects that it creates. Windows Vista includes powerful features that can stop malware before it can cause any problems. Not only will this be a huge time saver for any IT department, but it will also allow the operating system to run much smoother.

Multi-tiered data protection:

By using advanced data protection technologies, Windows Vista reduces the risk of your data on a stolen/missing laptop from being compromised. Windows Vista supports full-volume encryption to prevent other operating systems from accessing its data.

Another optional disk access prevention feature is the TPM v1.2 chip (Trusted Platform Model) that can be installed on your computer to store encryption keys. By using the TPM, the entire system partition is encrypted (both the hibernation file and the user data).

Custom authentication mechanisms:

The use of a user name and password for many companies is no longer a fail safe method of security. Windows Vista has improved upon Smart Card support making it easier for developers to add custom authentication methods such as biometrics and tokens.

Network access protection:

An internal network can be compromised by its mobile computers not having the necessary updates and security settings available due to the use of unsecured networks at hotels, cafes, airports...etc. Windows Vista will only allow a computer to connect to an internal network if certain security criteria are met. If the system has been compromised, it will not be allowed in.

Firewall:

System administrators have full control via Group Policy over what applications are allowed or blocked from communicating with the network. The control of network access is a key component of network security.

Windows Service Hardening:

If an unlikely virus attack were to exploit a vulnerable service, Windows Service Hardening would limit the damage by preventing file system or registry changes from occurring.

Internet Explorer 7 enhancements:

IE7 uses many new features to protect against malicious Web sites, malware, phishing and spoofing attacks. The new Protected Mode would also allow a user to define their own security settings.

Other new features of Internet Explorer 7 include:

- Highlights the address bar when users visit a Secure Sockets Layer-protected site and lets them check the sites security certificate validity.
- If visiting an unsafe site, a phishing filter would warn the user of this risk.
- Clear all cached data with a single mouse click.

Browse more securely and confidently with Internet Explorer 7!

Vista Optimizing Tweaks

So here i am once again after a lot of mining that what to start with on vista repair blog next as vista is a package of repair and improvisation's from the day one it has came to the users associated with windows.
